Jim Cantrell is a dillusioned language teacher in Spain. Not only is he beginning to feel some gult regarding his having returned to Europe after his grandparents had ventured away to claim the New World for themselves and their descendants, but the conditions in which he finds himself are personally and professionally demoralizing. A surreal journey we encounter as Jim winds his way through the streets of Madrid in search of some soul willing to lend him the slightest bit of comfort and understanding. Language barriers seem to be dwarfed by the cultural barriers he is made to confront day after day. And why wouldn't he return? Personal guilt over the abandonment of one's own child in a land to which he has never owed any alleigance continues to tie him to this external shore. The slightest details are appreciated by the reader and magnified into a kaleidescope of words and phrases -- a stream-of-consciousness prose seems to reflect his own meandering existence. A stream of cosciousness in which writer and reader seem to become one.
