A substantial collection of short prose from the author of 'Dream Compromise', with, as usual, a bias towards philosophical speculation coupled with social and political radicalism, not least in the title piece which is arguably reminiscent of 'Brave New World' in its futuristic setting.

John O'Loughlin's second volume of short prose (after 'A Magnanimous Offer') is exclusively prosodic in relation to a collection of short stories that deal with subjects as varied as a literary club, a painting of three literary heavyweights, a Camus-inspired monologue by a social cynic, a projection into a celibate future, and, of course, the title piece, a visit by a professor to the abode of the Devil, who is keen to impress upon him the extent of his sway over contemporary life. Ah!

John O'Loughlin's penultimate collection of short prose - his sixth in all - is indeed so philosophical as to effectively defy the concept of short stories. Even so, the contents are anything but dull, even if at times one or two of them borders on the bizarre.

John O'Loughlin's seventh and final volume of short prose contains some fifteen examples of the genre, each of which seems to vie with its neighbour in terms of the extension and consolidation of philosophical radicalism until, towards the end, we virtually enter the realm of aphoristic philosophy with pieces that seem to echo Nietzsche in their style and content.

A collection of short prose by John O'Loughlin which veers from the gently erotic opening piece to the seemingly smug but really quite nightmarish concluding piece, 'Dream Compromise', which has a trick in its tail, so to speak. As does the collection as a whole, in that it ends with a series of aphorisms in keeping with the author's fondness for philosophy.

This is the tale of two neighbours, one of whom is a writer and the other an artist, the latter of whom allows ambition to override common sense when he is befriended by a legendary art critic whose motives for patronizing his art are not all they would appear.

Michael, a humble, devoted, kind and a caring father was struck by a tragedy that weakens his faith in good. He abandons everything to seek and sever cold justice to those behind it. As he joins forces with a powerful and mysterious deity on the condition that he has to save mankind and most importatntly, track down his real enemies. The battle he faces makes him embrace his sole purpose in life, but what he later discovers will either make him or break him.
